Buy Needlepoint Tools

You've come to the right place to buy needlepoint tools, especially the ones that can be hard to find, or are adapted for needlepoint from other crafts.

You'll also find the biggest selection of markers tested for use on needlepoint canvas anywhere. From broad tip to extra fine, those pens are collected here, in one place, to order.

Links to the product pages (with pictures) on the partner sites are on this page(for faster loading). You can order the product, or search for similar products, such as different colors of the markers.

If the company has other products you would like, you can continue shopping and buy needlepoint tools from there.

"That White Tape"

Used to tape the edges of needlepoint canvas, the "white tape" used in needlepoint stores is really artist's tape. We have it here in the useful 3/4"size.

With this you'll never snag your threads again.

Pro Tapes White Artist's Tape 3/4 in. x 60 yd. roll

or the wider version:

Pro Tapes White Artist's Tape 1 in. x 60 yd. roll

Artist's Tape isn't very sticky, so to keep it in place, you need to rub it into the edges of the canvas.

The best tool for this is a bone folder, normally used to make handmade envelopes, cards or boxes.

To use, just rub it vigorously over each side of tape once it's placed on the edge of the canvas.

Buy needlepoint tools like these and you'll be astonished at how much easier it is to prepare your canvas and stitch.

Tacks, Brass & Steel

If you live in a low humidity area (most of The West) stainless steel or nickel plated tacks with 1/2" tops are perfect. These are your regular tacks with metal or painted heads, not the ones with plastic tops. Quilter's Tacks have bigger heads and longer shafts, so they are great for holding needlework on stretcher bars.

For those of use living in higher humidity areas, so with brass tacks. Often these are marketed as upholstery tacks.

Buy plenty, you can't have too many.

Staple Remover

Tired of breaking your nails when removing tacks?

The answer is as simple as a lever staple remover. This little tool will change your stitching life!

Put the end under the top of the tack and press down. the wand is a lever which lifts the tack so it can be removed easily.

My Favorite Markers

Each of these brands of markers are ones I've used successfully on needlepoint canvas. Buy needlepoint tolls such as great markers and you'll find a world of design possibilities opening up.

Fine and extra fine points are perfect for transferring a design by tracing it. Wider and brush tips work for coloring an area.

Allow to dry overnight before stitching.

Buying needlepoint tools like great markers isn't an indulgence. They will improve the look of the final stitching by coloring the canvas, allow you to design your own pieces without painting, and let you color the more widely available white canvas to match your backgrounds.

Metallic Markers

If you need real metallic colors on canvas, these are your best bet to buy needlepoint tools.

BUT they are oil-based, smell like spray paint and taker several days to dry.

I've linked to the extra fine point, but they are also available in medium by going to the site from here and searching.

Scissors

A great pair of scissors can make a huge difference in your stitching.

If you are arthritic or have carpal tunnel syndrome, scissors you squeeze like these (also called snips) will be easier. The Fiskars Softouch Micro-Tip Scissors ones are my favorite because you can use them for a variety of purposes.

For cutting metallic threads, go with Tim Holtz Non Stick Serrated Snip Scissors -Ergono, because metallic threads are had on regular scissors.

I love large finger hole scissors because they are more comfortable. These Gingher Scissor 4" Large Handle Embroidery look great.

Scissors with very sharp tips are great for ripping out. These Titanium Detail Cut Scissors 4 1/2" ones will make cutting stitches easier.

If you need to cut your own canvas, don't use regular scissors, canvas is so rough, it ruins the blades. Buy needlepoint tools to cut canvas. They are actually garden shears, like these Fiskars Garden Shears Model 9637 6984A-7. I've had my pair since 1998 and I never use anything else to cut canvas.

And don't forget to get a scissors sharpener, like this Fiskars ShearSharp Scissors Sharpener If you want to buy needlepoint tools, but have a hard time finding them, let me know. I'll try to track it down and make it available.
